While the American music space is raging, the global scene is growing too, with a lot of new talent and experimental audiences. Historically know as the home of classical music, the electronic music circuit in India is growing at a quick pace with the youth being especially taken up with these hot and upcoming music producers.
Oceantied – Oceantied is the solo electronic music project of Red Bull Music Academy Montreal Alumni, Ketan Bahirat. Hailing from Bangalore, India this 23 year old Krunk artist started producing electronic music when he was 16 and was trying to record for his rock band, Until We Last. Late last year, he released his debut EP, Tribes which is heavy on footwork and juke inspired beats. It is a mix of dance floor friendly tunes and sounds that you can relax to.
Nicholson –Brainchild of singer-songwriter/keyboardist –Sohrab Nicholson and Producer/Drummer – Rohan Ramanna, the band describes their sound as “electro organic”. Sohrab’s languished voice is tailor made to go perfectly with his lyrical writing style and will certainly make you feel a lot of feels.
Zokhuma – Goddess Gagged guitarist Arman Menzies’ solo project, Zokhuma, has quickly become one of the most popular acts on the Mumbai, India circuit. This artist is one of the few music producers whose beats are subtle, smooth and textured and have a futuristic, minimal vibe that you won’t get enough of. His passion for various kinds of music shows in his sets, which vary from dub sounds to African music to house and garage.
Sandunes – Mumbai-based producer-composer-synth player-drummer, Sandunes (Sanaya Ardeshir) is known for her unique brand of electronica. For her, music has always been about experimenting, discovering and finding her own sound. Late last year, she released her EP, “Downstream” through which she wanted to create an experience through the movement of sound as opposed to telling a story with songs. Her upbringing as a pianist and keyboard player allows her to create emotive beds of sound and her music can be described as a fusion of globally inspired ingredients.
MALFNKTION – MALFNKTION (Aditya Alamuru) started producing music when he was staying in upstate New York and later in Pittsburgh in 2012. He used to attend several open mics a week and slowly started collaborating with other artists whilst learning more and more about the basics of music production. Upon his return to Mumbai, he started his electronic music project MALFNKTION and produced sounds that resonated heavily with Indian Culture. His debut EP “Hindustani Rascal” was released in September 2015 and was replete with old Bollywood samples. It was selected by Apple Music India as “Featured Album of the week” as well as on Buzzfeed and Festival Sherpa. With his style that has evolved into a blend of electronica, hiphop and ethnic sounds from Hindustani music, Indian films and field recordings taken during his travels in India, you will find yourself hooked onto his music in seconds.
Kumail – Bombay boy, Kumail Hamid describes himself as a socially awkward 23 year old trying to make his mark in the music industry. He launched his debut album “Links”, mid last year and released his EP, “From you to Blue” earlier this month under his independent record label “Knowmad Records” that he started last year with fellow Musician, Aazin Printer. He is one producer whose music can be heard at any point of the day, in any mood, and be guaranteed to experience a sense of joy and calm. Apart from that, each of his live sets are unique and a crazy experience.
OX7GEN – Another of the many Mumbai based Music Producers, OX7GEN is an extremely talented artist whose identity is not limited to just the eletronica genre. He is a popular figure in some of the very well-known indie bands such as, including Skyharbour, The Colour Compound and Shaa’ir + Func. He says that OX7GEN started as a bedroom project when he was trying to learn how to make electronic music using software such as Logic and Abelton. The good response on his first song made him pursue electronic music production more seriously. The OX7GEN sound, although more inclined towards Drum & Bass, has a myriad of other influences as well which makes it a truly unique listening as well as dance floor experience.
