An IAS aspirant BMTC bus conductor!

IAS Aspirant

Madhu NC has registered the story of his grit by clearing the Mains section of the UPSC Civil services examination. The exam which is the dream and dread of all IAS aspirants is undoubtedly one of the most difficult and competitive examinations in India. It requires rigor, persistence, and determination to make it to UPSC Mains and finally to get through all the hurdles to become a Civil Servant. There are innumerable coaching institutes dotted across India who coach and guide students for UPSC Civil services examinations. What makes Madhu NC standout amongst 8 lakh UPSC CSE 2019 candidates, is that he studied and prepared while working as a bus conductor with BMTC

How did Madhu NC do it?

Madhu NC is first in his family to go to school and perhaps first-ever amongst bus conductors to make it to UPSC CSE Mains. A 29 years old Madhu cleared prelims in October 2019 and started preparing for Mains. He chose to write prelims in Kannada and later opted for English for the Mains exam.

Madhu, a boy from a little-known town Malavalli in Mandya, started working as a bus conductor at the age of 19 after completing his school. He holds a master’s degree in political science, after finishing his graduation and post-graduation from distance learning program. After 8 hours of a rigorous duty as a bus conductor, he puts in more than 5 hours every day to prepare for UPSC CSE.

Madhu draws inspiration and support from his boss, Ms. C Shikha, an IAS officer and current Managing Director of BMTC. Ms. Shikha guides him for the examination and gives about 2 hours every week.
