Turkish Plane Accident

The Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737 carrying 171 passengers and 6 crew members skidded off the runway at Sabiha Gokcen airport. The unfortunate accident is said to have killed three passengers and injured more than 170 onboard. The plane flew from Izmir province in the west and was trying to land in rough weather conditions. The Sabiha Gocken airport was closed after the accident and flights were diverted.

22 out of 171 passengers on the fated plane were foreign nationals from 12 different countries, while others were Turkish. The two pilots, who were from Turkey and South Korea were also injured in the accident. The Transportation Minister Mr. Cahit Turhan has said that so far, the authorities have not been able to speak to the pilots.

Video footage showed passengers trying to come out of the plane from cracks near wings, and rescue workers rushing towards the plane. Also, a blaze of fire could be seen in the video footage before it was put out by firefighters.

Pegasus airline is a 20 years old low-cost air carrier having a fleet of 83 aircraft, including 47 Boeings and 36 Airbus planes. Since 2018, it is the third time that a Pegasus aircraft has met with an accident while landing. Starting in January 2018, a Pegasus Boeing 737 had skidded off the runway at Trabzon airport, followed by another unfortunate accident at Sabiha airport on 7th January 2020. Though the previous accidents weren’t fatal, still the airports met with damage and had to be shut down for repairs. Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the new crash.
