Apple is reportedly developing a new smart home display inspired by the iMac G4’s design, expected to feature a small square screen with built-in speakers, set to launch next year.
Apple’s anticipated smart home display, expected to debut next year, could sport a design reminiscent of the iconic iMac G4, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter. Gurman describes the upcoming device as compact, with a square display perched above a small base, echoing the rounded bottom of the iMac G4 from over 20 years ago.
In addition to its distinctive look, the display is rumored to feature speakers, potentially positioning it as a “HomePod with a screen” — a concept long rumored to be part of Apple’s smart home strategy. While Gurman didn’t provide specific pricing details, he has previously alluded to the device being an “affordable” addition to Apple’s lineup.
Looking further ahead, Apple is reportedly working on a more advanced $1,000 model featuring a robotic arm that can reposition the screen, although that version isn’t expected to launch until 2026.
Both smart displays are anticipated to support customized versions of Apple’s apps like FaceTime, Calendar, and Notes, and to integrate Apple Intelligence, a feature not yet available on Apple’s existing smart home devices.
